Rust Community Update 53

Put your finest wolf head on and scrape the dried blood off of your trousers — we’re going to an art gallery.

Welcome

The header image is a lot of fun, but it needs some explanation. The art is the work of a community member–the talented Frank Walls–squeezed into the game by Ruigi, one of the admins of the PlayRust Reddit community server. He’s used an Oxide plugin to bring outside art into the game and onto the server.

So we have an in-game gallery for community art, Rust concept art, and even headlines from the Rust Times. If you’d like to see them for yourself, join the modded version of the server linked in the sidebar here. If you’re not able to, here’s a gallery.

But you should visit, if only to see the rest of the town Ruigi is putting together there. It has a bar with NPC bartenders and drunkards, a treehouse build from community builder GrymThor, and a deathmatch arena based on Goldeneye’s Facility level. Here’s a peek.

I do like a conceptual admin. Well done, Ruigi.

Oh, while we’re looking at cool things Reddit has done, you can now see all the game’s code commits on there as well. If you don’t use the twitter feed, this is the next best thing.

The Steam Workshop

The Rust Steam Workshop now has over 1000 items for you to vote on. That’s a lot of flannel and copyright shattering shirts to waggle a decisive thumb at. Here’s some cool things on there.

Black Metal Dash’s Gas Mask.

Though it’s more of a respirator.

Titanium’s Baseball Shirt.

A nice remnant of the past?

Bioclone’s Policeman T-Shirt

Bioclone has a few entries on their workshop page.

The Price of Fame

Vertiigo has quickly gained a heap of followers thanks to his introspective Let’s Plays. His work is some of the funniest stuff because it’s generally honest. Even at his angriest, like when he’s nervously waiting for the perfect time to take revenge, it’s generally relatable. We’ve all been there.

So watch these next two videos, but be prepared that they’re about the weight of being a celebrity in the world of Rust. He’s a target, now. Just for existing.

Of course, it doesn’t help his case that a lot of his videos have him killing people as well, but I have a tiny bit of sympathy for him. Part of Rust’s appeal is the consequence-free anonymity you can have on the servers, and that now seems impossible for him. What I’m saying is that Vertiigo needs to hire a voice actor to portray him.

Meanwhile, Ser Winter has also been pondering on the notion of celebrity in Rust. He has a different take on things.

Ouch! Some of those ‘cameos’ were pretty brutal.

Rubled

People like making programs that let you plan out your Rust bases. This is a very early look at one such program called Rubled.

It’s a spare time project by the creator and it’s not yet been released, but I encourage anything that’ll save me from the inevitable head trauma of trying to come up with a base design on a live server.

…and Finally

ShadowFrax has discovered some footage of Rust from the early day of film. Rock fights are ageless.

What a remarkable find. Who knew Rust was so old?

Get In Touch

Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now’s the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or to make a lovely shirt.

There’s a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well.

I can’t respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
