Rust Community Update 50

Gorgeous fan-art, a 3D base planning app, homicidal clergy, and more.

Welcome

The header image is ComBoze’s ‘The Beginning’ (though it looks like a swift ending is coming to the boar). It’s a lovely and evocative piece of fan-art, and he’s even included a sign stuck randomly to a tree in the background. If you want to read what it says, click here for the large version on Steam, and give him a thumbs-up if you like it enough. I think it deserves at least one digit aloft. I hope he turns his attention to a certain upcoming feature.

Fortify

This is pretty neat. Fortify is a 3D base-design program for Rust, made in Unity. It enables the users to plan bases offline, without having to worry about gathering resources or back-stabbing Youtubers.

You have freelook controls, so you can see everything from afar or from inside the base, and you can poke through floors without deleting them. It’s tied to Rust’s building restrictions and quirks, so walls will snap into position along the edge of a foundation block. Hell, it’ll even show you a cupboard’s building range.

The download can be found on the program’s sub-reddit, but it’s being hosted on Dropbox so I imagine it’ll probably hit the limit pretty swiftly. Good luck grabbing it.

The Builder

Rust isn’t like the normal world. This video appears to be saying that an attempted murder is a minor inconvenience to a building creator, and that you can even grow to respect and be friends with those who try to kill you. It’s not how I play the game, tbh. I have an enemy list that’s growing by the day, and if you’re on it it’s because you killed me, or chased me, or used voice as a radio station.

It’s nicely filmed and edited by GrumpySpanner.

“Thievery is Bi-Lingual”

Vigilantism is as much a crime as raiding and murder, so I’m not sure I can morally support what’s going on in Argyle and Phaedo82’s new video: To Catch a Raider. The premise is great: they built a house with the sole intention of attracting raiders into it, and then threaten and harass them on camera. It’s pretty sinister, and a fair bit awkward.

Is this what happens when people become too famous? Are they abusing their power and position in the Rust community? And is this partly my fault for embedding the video? Almost certainly.

Don’t Cross The Clergy

There’s nothing like religious imagery to make a clan more menacing. It should be a comfort, it should be a public service, but in Rust (and sadly the real-world) belief can be used as a weapon. In this case Redditor dyn00mite reports on the activities of The Brothers, a group of homicidal clergy who builds massive crosses and force people to battle for provisions: “Father Touchy (Actual in game name) along with several of the other Brothers, spawn nakeds in and have them fight in the buff for gear. Also chances are extremely high that if scripture is written on your base you’ve been raided. They’re crazed.”

I’m a bit of a sucker for fanaticism. There’s nothing scarier to me than belief backed up with machetes.

Pimp My Sleeper

It’s been a dark Community Update, so I’m happy to write about something a bit more positive. Redditor DolgVlaPet came across a sleeper lying in front of his fort. The usual instinct here is to take everything they have and eat their feet, but DolgVlaPet decided on a different course of action.

“At first, I wanted to give him some tools and clothes, but then I realized that he probably won’t live that long to log in and actually get them. So, I decided to do something different.”

Did it work? “A little update: When I logged in, he was out of the house, chest empty no sleeping bag, I though that he freaked out, grabbed whatever he could take and just run. Found him half an hour later, wandering around the rocks and explained the whole situation to him. He told me that, in fact he got scared and escaped what he though was his prison cell. Now that we talked this over, he is my neighbour, living infront of my fort.”

That is delightful.

… and Finally

If you have an hour to spare, here’s a video of a Rust mountain. Why? There is no why, there is only the mountain.

Till next time.

Get In Touch

Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now’s the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or to make a lovely shirt.

There’s a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well.

I can’t respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
