“You know what Rust needs?” That’s a question a lot of people ask. Most answers include things like c4, maps, and that one letter that was sent to the Facepunch offices and written in brown ink that had… Oh god, that wasn’t ink…

Facepunch forum user Frank Walls apparently has these thoughts several times a month, and luckily for us he’s also a very good artist. Such a good artist that I spotted his Junk Cars for Collecting Metal and Machinery thread and had to use his ideas. Some are a little off the wall. The top image is the result of the thread that started with the idea of scrap metal being collected from cars.

And then expanded a little to random junk piles.

One thing led to another and then this happened.

At which point he took a step back and made the top image.

I mentioned that he did this before. His most recent post is about the potential for Rust Chainsaws, where he fleshed out powered saws into this illustration.

He paints the picture with words, too: 

I’d rather see tools like this for raiding than C4. Would be awesome to saw through walls with this while having a couple of guys guarding you. Conversely, it would be thrilling to defend your base against this. The sounds of it outside and then the wall falls and this chainsaw guy comes crashing through a cloud of dust.

Drill ‘n’ Thrills

Raiding is getting some attention from both the community and from us. In fact, this idea was originally put up on Reddit by Petur, Rust’s mysterious tree-tweaker. The notion of setting drills instead of C4 set Redditor photoshop_nsfw to work, who came up with this concept. I’ve cropped it, so clicking it will reveal a whole lot of design features.

It’s fun to see people getting very specific about this stuff. The drill would work in a similar fashion as Payday 2’s drills, turning it into an event: the act is slow and loud, leaving potential raiders to worry about being discovered, and a makeshift drill would require you to fix it from time to time,

Which, of course, got other redditors on the case. My personal favourite is this one from beautifully named CarelessWhiskers that argues the case for Gunpowder Kegs

 Powder kegs could also have the potential to chain-react, so you could create huge explosions for massive damage. Imagine a “trap room” in your base, filled with kegs that automatically detonate when someone enters the room.

 

 

I love the idea that you could defend your house from raiders by shooting the keg they’re transporting. That would be amazing.

Subreddit Builds

The Rust Subreddit has been on fire, lately. I usually try to pick community work from lots of different areas, but this week there were so many good builds and threads that the rest of this post is basically a digest of their awesomeness. Winterfell

Winterfell

The first floor is a false floor with only pillars/walls to prevent break ins. The stone towers you see on the perimeter contain toolchests to prevent any towering attempts. The center of the main tower has openings on each level so we had 5 rooms throughout, and the balcony area was also accessible from the inside. The flag was unanimously the best part.

The Castle

A product of too much free time.

The River Hotel.

It contains 8 round houses with 3 stories. The ground floor has 8 campfires and 16 furnaces for public use. The sunroof is a meeting/crafting plaza only accessible by the residents of the hotel, also with 8 campfires and 16 furnaces. There are also some picnic tables which can be used for BP sharing.

Two Tower & Sky Bridge Base

Funny story, it has doors to reach the roof of the sky bridge, but it wouldn’t let me put in all the doors as its too low stability.

I hope all the creators there spotted this post by Rust’s resident newsman, Argyle Alligator. Like me, he’s on the lookout for amazing community buildings and activities. He’s brave, so if you have a group of cannibals with their own alter, he’s willing to witness the sacrifice.

The Final Map Post For A While. I Swear.

I’ve been enamoured by the Oxide plug-in that allows server owners to display maps of their server seeds. With so many people asking for it, and the ability to use it to check out seeds before committing to one, it’s by far my favourite community contribution. What I didn’t know is that you can also use it to see builds now, too. That’s probably a very specific thing that not everyone needs, but to celebrate an upcoming wipe the Playrust community server generated a map with the buildings.It looks a bit like an MS Paint scrawl.

This server was up during a dupe-bug that enabled players to generate masses of resources. The Southern areas of the map were particularly affected.
