Rust Community Update 45

Remaking concept art in-game, streamers invading each other, a look at the Battle Royale gamemode, and visiting Rust’s finest learning establishment.

Welcome

The header image is a very cool idea: abmenzel on Reddit looked at some old artwork–in this case a piece of community art by Howie that was part of the very firstcommunity update–and recreated it in-game. He took the art that helped get Howie a position as a concept artist at Facepunch, and for the past year Howie has influenced the look and feel of the game. It didn’t look like his art when he came on board, but after months of work we’re closing in on it.

Here’s the original:

I wonder what community concept art based on today’s game would look like in a year’s time?

Battle Royale

I mentioned the Battle Royale server mod last week. The mod turns Rust into a sort of survival deathmatch, with players starting on the edge of the world limits and the server slowly forcing everyone together. My hope was that someone with a voice and a copy of Rust would play it and record it all, and that’s just what Youtuber Holdacious did.

The constant squeezing of the player base in a short space of time, and the single life, creates a tense experience. You have no chance to come back if you die, so you’ll lose everything. All those internet points… gone. You can hear the tension cracking Holdacious’ voice as he fights to survive the event.

That was great. Well done, Holdacious. Thanks for taking up the challenge. People should sub to your channel for your bravery.

Want to join him? Gather some friends and cut and paste one of the following commands into your F1 menu to join a server.

client.connect seattle.intoxicated.co.za:27101
client.connect rust.intoxicated.co.za:27121

The more who play, the better the mod will be.

Ser Winter

Should we be worried that Let’s Players are starting beefs? Are we looking at a East coast vs West coast rapper situation brewing on the servers of Rust? In this video, Ser Winter invades Vertiigo‘s territory, searching the nakeds of the Noob Empire for Rust’s most infamous backstabber.

I’m not sure I should encourage this sort of thing, but at the same time Argyle should hear what Phaedo has been saying about his dress sense.

Ser Winter’s Channel is worth subscribing to: he does the above sort of stuff, but he also hosts a series of short instructional films called Rust for Dummies, and though you might know a lot about how to play the game, it’s always good to have someone remind you of the basics now and then.

Argyle Learns To Rust

Speaking of Argyle, he paid a visit to the PlayRust server’s Community College (before the last update). The college teaches all aspects of life in Rust, and Argyle visits during a raiding class.

The college was a fine example of a full service educational facility: it had dorms, a pool, and a Dean Hall.

Thanks for letting me know, Ruigi!

Wiping

Every now and then players start wondering about server wipes. They’re a painful, monthly occurrence at the moment, but also vital to keeping the game running smoothly (for now). So with that acceptance in mind, sometimes people talk about what the cause of the wipe could be. mcmurphy_wasnt_crazy’s reddit thread had some interesting ideas pop up.

His brief suggestion (‘Rather than simply wipe the server, make it part of the game. For example: 5 in game days before wipe, weather turns bad [biome appropriate]. 3 Days before wipe, weather turns extreme. Wipe day – TSUNAMI!) was picked up by Zaffaro, who crafted a scenario about two-day long Tsunami event.

During the first day, lowlands such as coastline, forests and deserts are gonna get flooded. Most if not all freshwater sourses are gonna get flooded over and animals are either going to flee or drown. Thus, players should’ve stocked up well on supplies, ’cause they’re gonna get hard to get during this time.

The flooding effectively “shrinks” the playable map, causing players to run into each other and fight for the scarce remaining resources. Highgrounds are gonna be sought after as the aviable dry land lesses every hour.

Of course, this means that people will probably just build on the highest peaks they can find to begin with, but I like the tension his scenario could add to something that’s generally utilitarian. Read the thread, there’s lots of talk about how to make something like this work.

… and Finally

Another link that I’m not going to say too much about. Just that the team breaking into the base are attempting to reclaim an old base.

I’d quite like to end on mysterious videos from now on. More please.

Get In Touch

Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now’s the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business.

There’s a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well.

I can’t respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
