Rust Community Update 33

Movies and feces.

Welcome

We’ve all been there: just a small crew of homo-erotically dressed Newmans trying to make it in the procedurally-generated world we call Rust. All it takes to undermine that effort is the attention of the faceless, server-scouring scumbags who kill without mercy. That’s Boris The Blade’s movie The Shack is about. It’s a beautifully shot work of machinima, and pretty enough for me to yank a frame and use it as the header. You can tell exactly what’s going on in that frame, and you really, really should watch the rest of it.

Speaking of movies…

Posters, Boy

Wayyyyyy back in the second Community Update, I mentioned a fan-movie called Airdrop, a Rust-inspired live-action movie that I basically called terrorism. It was that good. Anyway, the makers have released a poster based on the movie. I cropped it, but clicking the image below will take you to the full thing. If you like it, details on how to buy a physical copy are below.

The posters are available in 3 different sizes: small (A2), medium (A1) and large (A0) from Redbubble.

Community Concepts

We’ve had a few ideas for in-game items effects from the community this week.

Fashoooom!

FranceRust has come up with a neat method for players to communicate across distances AND to give seagulls something to dodge: flare guns.

It’s useful for spotting your friends in the map or coordinated actions. It can be used as a decoy for curious guys who thinks a noob used the flare gun. The flare gun can be used as a weapon, but it has low accuracy and low damage. You need to reload after each flare used.

Here’s the idea. They’ve done a good job of capturing the broken feeling of in-game objects.

And this is how the community envisions it appearing in-game.

I’ll admit that I have a weakness for flare guns in games. I love trying to work out the arc of the flare, and I love that the reaction is slow and full of flames. So this is a suggestion that I’d happily wave under the team’s nose. If not that, then at least a flaming arrow. That would also be acceptable.

Up In Your Grill

The upvoters at Reddit upvoted the heck out of hayungs’s grill concept, which would allow you to cook the tasty flesh of your enemies and look cool doing so. It would also make use of the barrels that mysteriously spawn across the land. It has such a threatening aspect that it reminds me of The Luggage from The Discworld, and now I’m sad.

I think there should be a 1 in 1000 chance that the lid could come crashing down on the person using it.

Poop

A little out there, but I’m open to dolphin’s idea that feces should be added to the game. I think I’ll let him make the case, though.

-Someone kills you for being in their territory. You arrive back later when you respawn and leave a hot steamy shit on their doorstep.
-You raid someone’s house. When they arrive back at their home they find an empty room with no supplies around, only you your teammates feces.
-You squat by a sleeping person and leave a steamy surprise for them by their sleeping body.
-Fling feces at enemies
-You’re walking through the forest, you see someone poppin’ a squat and you sneak up behind and bash their skull in with your rock and pick out bone fragments from their shit.

How would that look? Here’s a handy mock-up.

Yup. I think now’s the time to back out of this. Just smile and nod, and whatever you do don’t provoke any poop throwing.

Return of Rust Factions

Alongside cholesterol and Satan, Rust Factions has a special place in my heart: I wrote about it a few months ago, because a server keeping track of its eras, people, and events is something that Rust can uniquely do. As long as they care about keeping the information. The server shut down for a time when the game rebooted, but now with Rust hitting baseline they’ve decided now is the time to return. Veinharvest told me:

We’ve been online for just over a week now and we’ve had a great response of new players joining the whitelist with a great group of players who have been regulars since day one. RP has been great. A little over a week and there’s been wars fought, religions established, holy wars fought, and alliances forged. It’s exciting to see the RP faction server chugging along again.

And he sent a little gallery of the server’s first week back in action.

I love the use of the Satellite as neutral ground. And you guys are going to love the upcoming signs update.

Get In Touch

Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Right now I’m particularly interested to know if where you come from influences your building style. Let me know.

There’s a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well. We also have a dedicated site for suggestions and bug reporting.

I can’t respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
